Assignment: Free-content final

“Construct an original design using 100% end user created content. This project should be a culmination of the design principles you have learned throughout the semester. As you work, make decisions that show the understanding and realization of these design principles. You will be required to submit comments along with this project in which you will explain your decisions, why you used them, and what they do for the piece. A minimum of 6 such decisions should be mentioned in those comments. Creations should relate to your emphasis of study.”

My Comments

typography: I chose two different fonts, one easily readable serif font for most of the quote and one novelty in two different bright colors (taken from the colors in the image) for emphasis. I kept the leading pretty tight because the big difference between the two fonts separated them well.

placement: I tried to divide the piece into thirds. The dense area of color and the image should be one third and the more sparse area of color with the text should be two thirds, but I tried to give both sides equal visual weight.

harmony: For my 3 text colors, I pulled color directly from the block of colors on the right .

emphasis: I wanted two parts of the quote to stand out, so I used a large novelty font and brighter colors than the rest of the quote.

image: To create the watercolor look, I had to crop the image. I used a photoshop tutorial that used filters, messing with the brightness and contrast, threshold, and creating a layer mask over areas of color to create the effect.

linework/border: the linework or border is understated, mostly just there to create a distressed look, but it does help to contain the piece

Assignment: Edited-image advertisements

“Create 2 advertisements for a magazine by creating and altering images using the following guidelines: Select 2 images of 1-2 people. Use image editing software (i.e. Photoshop) to stylize the photos. One will be in the style of Andy Warhol and the other a pop/line art style. You may use the tutorials shown on http://www.melissaclifton.com/tutorials.html or other similar tutorials you may find. Just stick to the same style if you find something else. Apply the principles of image placement and use (as found in the chapter) to create an informative, intriguing, or aesthetically pleasing version of each image to be used in the advertisements of your choosing. Principles such as placement, divisions, grouping, flow, alignment, etc. will remain applicable to this assignment. As the designer, do some research and see what works in current magazine ads. Take those ideas and make informed decisions to create professional looking work. Deliverables: 2 advertisements of your choosing, each with a separate image you’ve created using the above criteria.”

“Using the principles of flow, create a logo for a company. This logo should not merely represent a company, but should somehow help direct the viewer’s eye, whether inward upon itself or outward to another element, it must incorporate elements of flow. After creating your logo, you will then create thematic elements to unify the style and image of the company. After you have designed all of these elements you will bring them together into 3 separate but related pieces. You will create a business card, letterhead, and envelope for your company incorporating all of elements described above. Ensure there is a “flow-of-format” between each piece, creating common cues and consistency with your repeated elements.”

“Create 4 images, giving particular emphasis to grouping and visual hierarchy, using the following criteria:

Create using a digital camera and/or by making a composite in a photo editing application (e.g. Photoshop).
Use grouping tactics to clearly achieve at least 4 of the visual messages listed: Unity, Celebration, Isolation, Escape, Intimidation, Logic, Anarchy
Use visual hierarchy to enforce the intended visual message.
Remember to also apply the principles of placement and division where applicable.”
